MOUNTAINEERING

Immigrating to Greece in the early 1995 was an inevitable outcome of a love affair with my future life partner. By that time I did not have any idea that Nicephore Niepce,in 1826, first managed to fix an image that was captured with a camera nor that Sir Edmund Hillary, an explorer and a mountaineer, had been confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest, in 1953. I did not possess any photo camera – I never had one-and the mountains as a substance, were for me only, a geomorphologic formation and nothing else.

There were no indications, at that time, of how those bits of missing information could affect me and it was impossible to foresee that “camera” as well as “mountains” would prevail my life – after nearly a decade- and would change me in the way of seeing and experiencing life. Priorities and interests were completely different at that time, while willingness for activities was going hand in hand with my age, and was concerning solely a few sessions in a nearby gym. Travelling frequently around Greece was our only weekend entertainment but almost by vehicle or any other transportation mean like train or even airplane.

It was 2005 when a tinny photo camera, a camera for one use, entered into our life – me and Kostas’s lives. I remember that I had arranged to do something different. I would try my first river rafting during a weekend in the middle of winter and I bought a photo camera for the boat. I cannot say that I had a bad time, or I did not like it, but what stayed in my mind was that tinny camera. It proved to be great. I really felt awful when I was constrained to dispose of it after the development of our “impressive” photos – which were not impressive at all. From that moment I was sure that I would carry on purchasing some more.

Noteworthy however was not the disposal of the camera itself but the consciousness that experiences finally become more important than anything else in life. And these experiences were worth to be saved. It was that time that I realized that the clock was ticking. It was as simple really as that It was certainly not too late for me. I was in a position to try to discover some new aspects of myself and gradually take care a bit about my physical condition
